Stephanie Alex
Mortal Dreamer
Owner of The Faerie Realm, a metaphysical shop in downtown Millville, NJ
Appearance:
Steph stands about 5'7". She is slender and wiry in appearance, with auburn hair cut in an angled bob. Her olive skin is paler in winter than it is in summer, and she has an oval face graced by large, grey-blue eyes. She dresses in flowy, comfortable dresses in rich and dark colors—burgundy, dark violet, indigo, forest green and the like—and big boots. Some would describe her style as "goth meets Stevie Nicks," and she looks younger than her 33 years. She is never without several pairs of earrings in each ear and a sterling silver triple-moon-goddess pendant on a short chain around her neck. She can often be seen in the early morning hours taking long walks on the hiking trails around the Pine Barrens, dressed in casual exercise wear rather than the nice clothes she wears to work at the store. Whenever she's at work or at home, her cat Gandalf is her constant companion.
A brief bio:
Stephanie (she prefers to be called Steph) Alexander was raised in Canton, Ohio, a small riverside town about an hour outside of Cincinnati. She attended Brandeis University as a pre-vet major, but due to influences beyond her control—primarily the failure of her parents' business and the resultant financial disaster—she was unable to continue on to veterinary school.
After she graduated with a B.S. in pre-veterinary studies, Steph settled in Greenwich Village, sharing a small apartment with two of her college friends. She worked for a good 10 years as an animal behaviorist for the New York ASPCA, where she earned a reputation as a person who has a very special gift for working with animals and socializing/rehabilitating abused animals.
In late 2001, Stephanie moved back to Canton for a few years. She doesn't talk much about what happened back then, except for the friendship she cultivated with Bethany Emmings, a woman who operated a New Age store called the Aquarian Dream. During this period, Stephanie cultivated the intuitive and psychic skills she had and devoured all the information she could find about pagan traditions.
In March of 2004, Steph decided she was ready to move back to the East Coast. Not New York, though. Never again a city, she told herself. After diligent research, she decided on the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. As she had begun to cultivate her intuition and psychic skills, she had begun to discover that the constant psychic "hum" of cities on the scale of New York were just too hard on her body and mind.
She had grown to love metaphysics and spirituality even more through her connection with Bethany and the Dream, and as she began to see a new future for herself, she knew it included running a similar shop.
Steph looked around the Barrens area and found a beautiful old building in downtown Millville--a building that just happened to be for sale. With a first-floor storefront and two rental units upstairs, it was perfect for her. She spent the first several months renovating the storefront and the rental units--almost entirely on her own, with some help from home renovation shows and websites, and moved herself into the second-floor apartment.
Then it was time to buy merchandise for the store. She visited gem and mineral shows, ordered catalogs from metaphysical distributors such as New Leaf, Inner Traditions and others, and put together the enterprise she hoped would bring her joy and sufficiency, a shop called The Faerie Realm.
